The Suriname Energy Chamber (SEC) recently held a meeting in December with the Director of
Taxes, Ms. Marita Lautan-Wijnerman, to clarify the import duty exemptions on solar energy
systems in Suriname. This meeting aimed to provide SEC members with insights into the
government’s incentives for renewable energy adoption.
The latest ministerial decree confirms that the 90% import duty exemption is no longer
limited to solar panels alone but now covers the entire solar energy system. This means that
key components such as batteries, which previously faced import duties exceeding 30%, are
now included under the reduced tariff.
This is a major step towards making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for
businesses and households in Suriname. By lowering the financial burden on essential
equipment, the government is actively encouraging the transition to sustainable energy
solutions in the country.
The SEC continues to advocate for its members and the broader energy sector, ensuring that
businesses are well-informed about relevant policies and incentives. Companies interested in
benefiting from this exemption should ensure compliance with the outlined requirements.
A copy of the ministerial decree can be requested via the SEC Secretariat through
WhatsApp or email.
