Solar Energy Must Become a National Priority

Paramaribo – During a meeting held last night at The Spot Live Entertainment Center, formerly known as Flamboyant Park, solar energy companies and installers in Suriname gathered to discuss the future of the sector. Orlando Olmberg, Chairman of the Suriname Energy Chamber (SEC), emphasized the importance of collaboration. “Without unity, the role of local companies in the energy transition risks remaining marginal,” Olmberg stated.

Suriname holds tremendous potential for solar energy, but lacks the necessary structure and support. Earlier this year, the SEC, in collaboration with Energie Bedrijven Suriname (EBS), the Energy Authority Suriname (EAS), and the Dutch organization PUM — comprised of experienced experts — organized a Masterclass aimed at strengthening local capacity. This partnership demonstrated what is possible when stakeholders join forces.

Raymond Renfrum, co-initiator of the meeting, highlighted that better cooperation leads to faster solutions. He pointed to lengthy inspection processes at EBS and poor communication about new regulations. “By working together as a sector, we can improve these issues.”

The management of HSW, one of Suriname’s larger installation companies, stressed that the government must create more opportunities for local businesses. “We invest in training, but current requirements effectively exclude us. Even with foreign partners, participation is nearly impossible.”

The Association of Installers (VIS) was also present and presented plans to establish an independent inspection authority. The Suriname Energy Chamber supports this initiative, provided it is developed in close consultation with EBS and EAS.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to create a platform for dialogue, transparency, and collaboration. The goals include strengthening local capacity, expanding training programs, and improving access to financing for customers who cannot afford the upfront costs of solar energy systems.
