The Suriname Energy Chamber (SEC) stands as a pivotal institution in Suriname’s energy sector, offering an essential platform for private sector engagement and acting as a crucial bridge to the government. This dual role fosters public-private partnerships (PPPs) that are instrumental in the sector’s development. Membership in the SEC brings numerous benefits, including networking opportunities, advocacy, access to industry information, and active participation in policy formation from local content development till the facilitating of electric vehicles in Suriname. The Role of the Suriname Energy Chamber

The SEC is dedicated to facilitating collaboration between private enterprises and government entities. It serves as a central hub for the energy industry, where businesses can connect, share insights, and collaborate on various initiatives. The Chamber organizes conferences, workshops, and networking events, drawing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to address current challenges and explore opportunities.

Networking Opportunities: SEC members have exclusive access to networking events, conferences, and workshops, providing a platform to meet industry leaders, potential business partners, and government officials. Networking is vital for forging relationships that can lead to new business opportunities and collaborations. The breakdown for the above mentioned is as follows:

  • Networking events: The SEC actively fosters networking opportunities throughout the year by organizing at least two events. These events, typically linked to significant industry milestones like the launch of the Suriname Energy Guide or the signing of key partnerships, provide a platform for members, associated partners, and relevant stakeholders to connect, collaborate, and exchange ideas. These gatherings create a dynamic environment for building relationships, exploring potential partnerships, and discussing industry trends and challenge
  • Suriname Oli and Gas Exhibitions (SEOGS) :   is an annual event where the SEC normally plays an active role. Even for members who cannot attend SEOGS , the SEC provides valuable support by granting them access , allowing them to connect with potential investors but also  ensuring that members stay informed about the latest industry trends, technological advancements, and business opportunities.
  • Invitations: Whenever the SEC is invited to a network meeting, is possible that its members are also invited to join. In this case members receive an invitation via the secretariat of the SEC
  • The SEC board :The board consist of government officials who can be of meaningful influence  to its members where possible in the collaboration of business opportunities within the sector by providing guidance and support

Advocacy and Representation: The SEC advocates on behalf of its members, representing their interests in discussions with the government and other stakeholders. This ensures that the concerns and needs of the private sector are considered in policy-making processes, giving members a collective voice that can influence decisions affecting the energy sector.  The breakdown for the above mentioned is as follows:

  • Direct Lobbying: The SEC Schedules meetings with government but also other prominent companies in the sector to advocate for members’ interests and maximize benefits

Access to Information: Members receive regular updates on industry developments, market trends, and regulatory changes. This information is crucial for making informed business decisions and staying competitive in the dynamic energy market. The SEC also provides access to research reports, market analyses, and other valuable resources on request. The breakdown for the above mentioned is as follows:

  • Monthly Newsletters: The SEC sends out newsletters each month, summarizing key industry developments, regulatory updates, market trends, etc.
  • Suriname Energy Guide: The SEC provide its members, free of cost with the (digital/ hard copy) version of the Suriname Energy Guide. This guide provides members  with information on some of the  key players within the sector and other valuable well-written and informative articles
  • Upon request: The SEC is available to provide its member with access to research reports or other valuable information where possible.

Professional Development: The SEC connects with different relevant organizations and stakeholders that offers training programs, workshops and seminars to help members enhance their skills and knowledge. These programs cover a range of topics, including regulatory compliance, technological advancements, and best practices in the industry, ensuring that members maintain a competitive edge. The breakdown for the above mentioned is as follows:

  • Training/ workshop: Each year the SEC organizes training/ workshops in collaboration with highly esteemed partners within the Energy sector to help strengthen and build the capacity of its members but also the Suriname Companies in general, by Providing specialized knowledge and practical skills in sustainable energy solutions and solar energy. Members of the SEC has the opportunity to let one employee join this training free of charge.
  • Networking and Collaboration:  At each training networking opportunities between participants and experts are being facilitated in order to exchange ideas and experiences to increase the personal development and to promote partnerships for future projects
  • Certification and Recognition:  An official certificate as recognition for the completion of the training is provided to each participant

Public-Private Partnerships: Membership in the SEC enables participation in PPs that drive sector development. These partnerships pool resources, expertise and technology to implement large-scale projects, benefiting members by promoting sustainable energy production and economic growth. The breakdown for the above mentioned is as follows:

  • Identification of PPP: The SEC plays a crucial role in identifying potential PPP opportunities within the energy sector. In doing so the SEC members may be directly involved in the implementation and operation of PPP projects, depending on their specific roles and expertise. This could include construction, providing specialized services etc.

 

Increase visibility: The SEC increases its member Visibility in order to attract Potential
Clients and Partners, expand their market reach and build Brand Awareness.

• Placement on website: All SEC-members have a prominent place on the SEC website
with their logo, a short description & contact information including the link to their
website
• Highlight in the newsletter: Members are periodically highlighted in the SEC newsletter
and have the opportunities to share articles to be included or upcoming events.

  • Membership card: Each member of the SEC will now receive a membership card.  The card serves as immediate identification of the member, streamlining access to events, meetings,etc.

Regional Involvement and Cooperation

The SEC’s influence extends beyond Suriname’s borders through strategic regional partnerships. One notable collaboration is with the Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC). This partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aims to foster cooperation and share best practices between the two organizations and the two countries. This alliance enhances the regional energy sector’s cohesion, providing members with additional opportunities for cross-border collaboration and investment​

Additionally, the SEC is involved with the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), representing the Guyana’s (Suriname , Guyana and French Guyana), as the biggest energy forum within the Caribbean . This cooperation with CREF highlights the SEC’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development across the region. Participation in CREF events provides SEC members with access to a broader network of regional and international stakeholders, further enhancing their ability to engage in impactful projects and initiatives​
